February is the month of chocolates, flowers, fancy dinners and many other creative ways to show our special someone how much we love them. According to many studies, nothing beats the power of touch as the ultimate way to express comfort, healing and love. Did you know that there is actually a love hormone?

Studies show that Oxytocin (often referred to as the “love” hormone) is increased and the heart rate goes down when people snuggle up or bond socially. The same has been found true for any comforting touch sensation, such as a back or foot rub. The act of being touched has an incredible ability to make someone feel better. Think about that awful moment when you bump your head on a sharp corner. The first thing that everyone does is bring their hand to the area of pain. Just holding or gently rubbing a painful area can help bring a sense of calm to a brain that is is screaming, “Ouch!”. Massage therapists are taught about muscles, fascia tension, adhesions and other issues that can cause pain and discomfort. We learn how to physically work on these areas to relieve pain and increase an overall sensation of wellness and comfort for our clients, but the power of touch goes far beyond physically manipulating the body. The physiological benefits are profound. Being touched by someone that we love compounds this sensation and has the ultimate calming affect. For this reason, we are extremely pleased to present our upcoming couples massage workshop. It’s not designed to transform anyone into a professional massage therapist, but it is a fun opportunity to learn some easy techniques to use touch on your special someone. What a great way to spend a few creative hours with your partner sipping on tasty beverages and snacking on tasty appetizers while practicing some ways to express your love through the power of touch.
